Mid-Atlantic Final-4 to be hosted by North Penn
Posted: 12/10/02
Following the MARFU AGM last Saturday, the venue for the Division II Final-4 has been announced. The host club is North Penn, in Lansdale, PA. Obviously for us there is the little matter of beating Doylestown up there the week before to even reach the Final-4. Just thought I would give you something to focus on, as we get prepared over the winter.
Mid-Atlantic Division II Spring Play-offs
Posted: 11/05/02
Although the season is not officially over (still have 7 matches yet to be played in Division II south early next year - see below for details) the Mid-Atlantic Elite-8 teams have just about qualified. The most important thing for us is that Frederick is definitely in as PRU #2 and our match-up is set (as far as I can determine), an away trip to Doylestown (EPRU #2) on Saturday April 12th.
Outstanding Division II south fixtures:
(Postponed - to be rescheduled)
United v Washington Irish
Western Suburbs v Happy Valley
March 1st 2003:
Rocky Gorge v United
Frederick v Severn River
March 8th 2003:
Frederick v United
Raleigh v Washington Irish
Rocky Gorge v Norfolk
A couple of these matches have big implications on seeding into the Mid-Atlantic Elite-8. Rocky Gorge should be in as seed #8, but a win over United will confirm that (otherwise there are point differential issues that could result in United taking seed #8). The match between Raleigh and Washington Irish has major implications. The winner goes in as seed #1, the loser as seed #4. Here are the MARFU Elite-8 matches scheduled for April 12th 2003:
Mid-Atlantic Elite-8 Matches (Saturday April 12th 2003):
Seed #1: Washington Irish or Raleigh v Seed #8: Rocky Gorge or United
Seed #2: North Penn v Seed #7: Lancaster
Seed #3: Doylestown v Seed #6: Frederick
Seed #4: Washington Irish or Raleigh v Seed #5: Norfolk
Mid-Atlantic Holds On To Both Seeds For 2003 Division II Nationals
Posted: 09/03/02
I think it’s fair to say that we were all holding our breath and praying that the Mid-Atlantic had not given up it’s second seed (that Frederick Rugby claimed by reaching the National final in 1998) after the 2002 performances by Washington Irish and Media. The championship brackets for 2003 have just been released by USA Rugby and MARFU just managed to hang on and has seeds #13 and #15 (North East #3 was dropped and South #2 added). No host locations have been announced as of yet. This would be a great year for Frederick to get back on the National stage and show that MARFU can compete. I hope that this news gives you further motivation to work hard and win our division! Full brackets are available on the USA Rugby site.
Club Meeting - Krugs, Thursday Dec. 12, 7pm
Posted: 11/25/02
Please do your best to make the Frederick Rugby Club meeting on Thursday December 12th. We'll hold it at Krugs starting at 7:00pm and running to around 9:00pm. The main reason for this meeting is to have a few beers, get excited about the spring season and all it has to offer and to meet our new guys. We'll also have the full schedule - schedule cards, Frederick Rugby posters, information on the bus trip and Savannah - all that stuff. Any potential new players interested in joining Frederick Rugby or just wanting to find out about the club should come to the meeting as well to meet everyone. Have a great Thanksgiving - keep working out (you know that Dave and Steve will have surprises for you in the preseason) and please attend this meeting.
MARFU Prepares for ITT’s
Posted: 11/21/02; Contributed by Lance French, Marfu Coach
Over the past 2 months the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Union (MARFU) has been undergoing an extensive territorial search for any players who want to be an Eagle. The word is out, that anyone who wants to be an Eagle needs to fly south to the ITT’s. And the MARFU Sharks are doing just that!! According to the press, the Eagle Selectors and Tom Billups are watching. And if you want to get selected, you have to be at the ITT’s.
The All-Star search actually started at the beginning of the 2002 fall season with the announcement of the MARFU schedule. The All-Star schedule includes open trial training sessions, inter-territorial trial matches between the Potomac, Virginia, and Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Unions. The schedule also includes playing against the PRU Collegiate side, the New Zealand Embassy team in the annual fight for the Ambassador’s shield, 2 matches against the Northeast Territory in Monmouth NJ, and 2 matches against the South Territory in Raleigh NC.
The first match against New Zealand was well played by the MARFU All-Stars. The MARFU first XV was able to play pattern rugby and strong defense against a very talented KIWI side. The score at the end of the first half was MARFU 13, NZ 7. The spectators (over 1,000 strong) and the MARFU coaches witnessed strong performances by several new players from around the Territory. This year the Embassy game Man of the Match is Art Hall. Art plays for the Frederick Rugby Club in Frederick Maryland. Frederick is a Division II perennial champion. Frederick, like many of the non-DI clubs in the Mid-Atlantic Territory and the USA, produces good rugby players. Art is a perfect example of the diversity of the 2002 MARFU All-Star team.
The New Zealand Ambassadors game is a great way to start the All-Star season. The game is divided into four, twenty-minute periods with an open substitution rule. This rule allows both teams to play a great number of players. And the MARFU did just that, playing over 25 different players in the match. The final score was MARFU 13, New Zealand 19. When asked about the game after the match, MARFU coach Lance French said, “ we played well, we had the opportunity to see several new faces, and in the end we still could have won. All in all, a very good start to our season.”
The second match of the day saw the MARFU II team beat the PRU Collegiate team by the score of MARFU 40, PRU 10. This game is a testament to how strong the response has been this year in the MARFU search for its All-Stars. The game is organized the same as the Embassy game with four twenty-minute periods. The MARFU coaches played an additional 25 + players in this match. This provided the additional opportunity for several players to catch the eyes of the MARFU selectors. And according to the coaches, several players did show well and will get more opportunities against the Northeast.
Last weekend the MARFU traveled to Monmouth NJ to play two matches against the Northeast Rugby Union. And if the travel was not difficult enough for the MARFU players, the weather was. In a classic Northeaster rainstorm the two unions met and tested their talent. In the end, the Northeast got the best of the MARFU in both matches. The first match was MARFU 0, Northeast 35 and the second match was MARFU 7, Northeast 20. During the first match the MARFU played well in spots, but was never able to get more than 3 phases of rugby together without dropping the ball. And in turn never crossed the try line. However, the first 15 included the play of 10 new faces from the New Zealand game. Which allowed the selectors the opportunity to see more combinations before the ITT’s. “We plan and make selections to win, coach French said. But at this point in time, the players must get the chance to play. And seeing everyone is still the bottom line. Next week against the South, that all changes.”
So now, it’s on to Raleigh for this years MARFU All-Star team. And if you listen to what the coaching plan is, the MARFU should be stacked with it best XV in this Saturday’s showdown in Raleigh.

Winter Banquet set for the Red Horse
Posted: 11/07/02
One of the best traditions of Frederick Rugby is the annual winter banquet. This year's banquet will be held on Saturday January 25th at the Red Horse on Rt-40 in Frederick. This is a great opportunity to get our non-playing members back involved with the Club as well as giving wives and girlfriends an opportunity to actually meet the many new guys in our Club. Contact Julian if you haven't yet reserved/paid. Figure on $35 a person (that includes food and beer). Check out the fun in photos from last year's banquet.
Jan 25th: College and High School Rugby Camp
Posted: 12/10/02
On Saturday January 25th 2003, Frederick Rugby and Mount Saint Mary’s College Rugby will host a rugby skills camp for college and high school age rugby players. Colleges attending include Mount Saint Mary’s and Loyola; high school programs include New Windsor and Maryland Exiles. The camp will start at 8:00am and run to 3:00pm with a break for lunch. The emphasis is on constant movement, there is very little down time. The camp will be held indoors in the Mount gym and on the Mount pitch (weather permitting). If anyone is interested in getting involved as an assistant coach please just come along!

- Turn left into the main College campus.
- Take your first left and follow signs to the gymnasium.

Feb 15th: Six Nations Live - England v France
Posted: 12/10/02
On Saturday February 15th 2003, the Six Nations tournament kicks off. Unfortunately Fox Sports World did not bid on the package, however the matches are being broadcast live close by in Bethesda (Flanagan’s). The first day will have Italy hosting Wales (kick-off 8:30am EST) followed by one of the big matches of the tournament England hosting France (kick-off 11:00am EST). France is the defending tournament champion (beating England 20 -15 last year) and holds a #5 world ranking. England has managed to throw the Grand Slam away for the last 4 years, but who knows, maybe they’ll actually perform this year. England holds the #1 world ranking, based mainly on an 18 home winning streak. This match should be a classic - try to get down to Flanagan’s and catch the action.

Although we have never played Roanoke before they have played some teams we know and acquitted themselves well. Last season they went one-and-one against Raleigh and handily beat Winchester. Kenny’s PRU All Star Hellfish - Report from Saranac
Posted: 08/06/02; Submitted by K.Orndoff
The Flying Hellfish (PRU) first match was against the 2002 Division II National Champions, New Haven, CT. With a major problem in all set pieces, not winning a single line-out or scrum of our own, we played defense most of the match. New Haven got on board with a converted try and a penalty kick to lead 10-0. With about 10 minutes left in the match, Chris (Rocky Gorge) picked off a pass within our 22m to give us possession, which we managed to move down the pitch and score between the posts, converted by Kenny. With only a minute or two left, Kenny missed a penalty kick that would have tied the match. Final score: New Haven 10 - Flying Hellfish 7.
This first loss put the Hellfish in the losers bracket, set to face Burlington, VT. With a couple of changes in the forwards, we managed to correct our set piece problem and got to play some offense. This match was a battle to the end, trading tries and penalty kicks. Burlington had the lead 26-18, with minutes left to go, when Kenny looped to the outside, got the ball back and broke through for a 60m (yes, Kenny actually ran 60m) score between the post which he converted. Burlington, however, came right back with another converted try to end the match. Final score: Burlington 33 - Flying Hellfish 25. This second loss, unfortunately, eliminated the Hellfish from the tournament.
Frederick Players:
- Kenny Orndoff (1T, 2C, 2P) - fly half
- Jamie “Sparkles” Romano - inside center
- Brian “Magnum” Taormina - outside center
Timmy Desmond also traveled to Saranac, to play in his first match since the 2001 Rites of Spring tournament, when he blew out his knee and screamed like a woman. He managed to hook up with the Mystic River over-40 squad, which faired a little better. With one loss and one win on Saturday, Timmy was scheduled to play a consolation championship on Sunday morning. Unfortunately, upon arrival, we were informed that Mystic River had forfeited the match, and our tour group was done playing for the weekend.
Former Frederick player and coach, Lance French, aside from coaching the Flying Hellfish squad, was also playing for the PAC over-30 team. With two wins on Saturday, they advanced to the Championship on Sunday morning, where they lost a tight match against Philly Carps 20-14.
Other Championship Matches:
Premier: Old Blue over Albany (blowout)
Club: Brockport over New Haven (Brockport was a mixture of Rochester and Life College)
Division B: Schenectady over Albany Developmental (Schenectady had about 8 OMBAC players including former Raleigh full back Dave DeSorbo and Albany Dev. was a Northeast College Select side.
The weather was great, mid 80's and sunny all weekend and a great time was had by all.
Some other local-ish teams attending were:
Brandywine, Tobacco Road (Raleigh), Doylestown, South Jersey, Monmouth, Morris, North Jersey, Severn River, North Penn, Lost Lions (Penn State/Happy Valley), Wilmington (over 40), Lancaster (over 40) and Blackthorn (over 45).
Atlantic Cup Tournament: August 24th and 25th
Posted: 07/22/02
The fall season will open with what has become a tradition for Frederick Rugby, the Atlantic Cup Tournament in Lewes, Delaware (close to Dewey Beach, north of Ocean City). This is a fun weekend, really a mini-tour, with at least three matches (everyone who travels will play) and the opportunity to hang out at the Dewey Beach bars with your teammates. As this is a beach tournament there’s plenty to do outside of rugby so wives and girlfriends will have a good time. The Club (or rather Stax) has reserved 4 rooms for Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th at the Sea Esta IV motel right by the bars in Dewey Beach (may be a bad idea from a coaching perspective but at least nobody needs to drive in the evening!). We will look to get 5 - 6 in a room, which should work out to about $60 per person for the weekend. If you are bringing someone you will need to make your own booking.
One important thing to note is that there is very limited parking (just one space per room) so we will need to carpool.
Hotel Information: Four rooms reserved under Jeff Carrington.

July 4th Beer Garden - Great Success in Serious Heat
Posted: 07/08/02
Chuck Bare just wanted to let you know that the club made $886.51 from the beer garden yesterday. There was $586.51 in tips (wonder who gave the penny!) plus the $300 for running the beer garden. The guys did a great job, particularly Magnum, Shane, and Severio, along with Dave Crome, who were there all day in 100ºF heat. Also, thanks to Allen for his help, the hand outs, signs, and the great banner he had made.
First 15s Practice Tuesday August 13th
Posted: 07/03/02
Although we are still enjoying summer I would just like to get you to mark your calendars with this important date. Practice will be at Whittier each Tuesday and Thursday running from 7:00pm to dusk (around 9:00pm) starting on Tuesday August 13th. We will most likely move practice to 7th Street in September to utilize the floodlights. Our first matches are at the Atlantic Cup Tournament on Saturday and Sunday August 24th and 25th. Please take a moment to check the schedule and let me know (jreading@erols.com) if you will be unavailable for any of the matches.
Steve Schleupner Joins Coaching Team
Posted: 07/03/02
Most of you know Steve either as a player or more recently as that rather sadistic and very organized Sevens Coach. Well, I’m really pleased to be able to announce that Steve will be joining us as a full time Coach for the 15s season. Steve will continue in his role as Conditioning Coach but will also assist Dave Gentzel as a Backs Coach and will serve as the B-side match day Coach. Steve brings a lot of experience and energy to Frederick Rugby and I am really looking forward to having him on the team.
Frederick Rugby loses a great coach and friend
Posted: 06/25/02
Frederick Coach Jim Ford suffered a heart attack while jogging and died on Friday June 21st. He was 51. Our hearts go out to Jim's wife Laurel. Jim was part of the coaching team that took Frederick to the National Championships in 1998 along with his good friend John Redmond. Over the last five years Jim has been at the helm of Frederick Rugby guiding us through a rebuilding period and has been very much involved with developing a new crop of young rugby players. We will all miss the additional push ups and sprints that Jim would have put us through this season. Please find the funeral arrangements below, provided by John: -
For those of you who may not have heard, Jim Ford former MOB scrum half & coach, and current assistant coach of the Frederick Rugby Club, died on Friday, June 21st, while running in his neighborhood. He is survived by his wife Laurel, and there will be an obituary in both the Frederick News-Post and Washington Post on Tuesday, June 25th.
There will be a visitation on Wednesday, June 26th at the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home located at 106 East Church St., Frederick, MD., 301-662-2175. The hours will be 3-5:00pm and 7-9:00pm. There is street parking, a lot on site, and a public lot within one block of the funeral home. There will be a social after 9:00pm at Bushwallers Bar on Market St., which is walking distance from the funeral home.
There will be a memorial service on Thursday, June 27th at St. John's Catholic Church located at 116 East 2nd Street, which is one street parallel to the funeral home. The Fall 2002 Season
Posted: 06/14/02
The upcoming season schedule has been released - yes it’s another league restructuring, but it looks interesting. Gone are the drives to Philly (we will have to organize some sort of a Don’s cheesesteak run though) to be replaced with a trip to Penn State (I’m sure that Troy will enjoy that), a drive south to Norfolk and then a number of close by Maryland and Northern Virginia trips. The SuperLeague and Division I teams have been removed and actually play in a Division I with the 19 Division II teams being split north and south. The northern 9 Division II teams are all EPRU; the southern 10 Division II teams consist of the PRU and VRU. The schedule gives us the opportunity to exact some sort of revenge on local teams who have recorded recent victories over Frederick such as Severn River, Western Suburbs and Washington Irish along with the chance to play the strong southern sides Raleigh and Norfolk. The season carries over to spring 2003 with two home fixtures. Our record against the other PRU teams within Division II South will be used to reach the MARFU Elite-8. This means that the Happy Valley, Rocky Gorge, Severn River, Washington Irish and Western Suburbs matches are very important with the top two teams qualifying for the MARFU championships. Wins or losses to the VRU teams Norfolk, Raleigh, Richmond and Roanoke will not be factored into our league record. As with last year the point system used will not be a straight forward 1 for a win, 0 for a loss. A win scores 4 points with a possible bonus point if 4 tries are scored, a draw is worth 2 points and although a loss is worth nothing, a bonus point is available if you lose by 7 or less. In addition to the league matches we have a great tournament on the beach north of Ocean City (Atlantic Cup) and three matches in England. Great stuff!
The Second Coming
Posted: 06/14/02
One of Frederick’s great guys will be returning to the East coast this fall - Rob Schuster. Unfortunately there is something about Samoan blood that prevents these proud islanders from living anywhere cold, so the Schuster family will stay south of us in Georgia. However, Rob will be part of the Savannah squad in Spring 2003 and I’m sure that we will be able to convince him to come up to Frederick and jump in for a match or two. If you never had the opportunity to play alongside Rob I strongly suggest that you give it a go. It is one of the best rugby experiences you will ever have.
Frederick Names New Head Coach, Julian Reading
Posted: 05/10/02
With much applause, Frederick made it official this week that Julian Reading will become the new head coach. Julian played a major role in making Frederick Rugby what it is today both on and off the pitch and will surely work hard to lead the club to its lofty goals. He will be stepping down as an active A-Side player, but will be bringing years of playing experience and knowledge that will show itself through others. Already having the respect of the players, Julian is a welcomed leader.
Frederick Rugby Pig Roast and Golf Classic (Saturday July 27th)
Posted: 05/15/02; Updated 05/18/02
The Pig Roast, our official end of summer party will be held on Saturday July 27th at the Goetz Ranch (thanks Al). This is a great opportunity to drink too much and eat a lot of pork (if you get back from golf in time!). As well as the chance to check out who’s been training over the summer and who hasn’t (they are the guys who are a bit larger than the last time you saw them and tend to sweat profusely) Art will be presenting player awards. The Frederick Rugby Golf Classic will be held staring early in the morning. Check out all the tournament information.

Ultimate Rugby Youth Camp (July 23rd - 26th, 2002)
Posted: 01/03/02
Frederick Rugby and Mount Saint Mary’s College Rugby will be presenting the Ultimate Rugby Youth Camp this summer. Players from 15 to 21 will have the opportunity to live and breathe rugby for four days (at the Mount Saint Mary’s campus) and be coached by three members of the England Development Squad. Cost will be $365 per person (which includes all aspects of the camp) and Frederick Rugby will be providing up to $500 in partial scholarships to players from local high school and college programs. Additional financial support should be forthcoming from the Potomac Rugby Union and some local rugby vendors. This should be a great experience for young rugby players in our area and is another example of how Frederick Rugby’s new Director of Rugby Don Briggs is committed to promoting youth rugby. For more information on the camp please go to (www.ultimate-rugby.com/_wsn/page2.html). If you are interested in applying for a scholarship, please have your Coach contact Manager Julian Reading (jreading@erols.com).

Frederick Rugby July 4th Beer Garden - All the Details
Posted: 05/15/02; Updated 07/01/02
As most of you know, Chuck Bare has managed to secure a Beer Garden for Frederick Rugby at the upcoming July 4th festivities in Baker Park. Basically we are responsible for operating the Beer Garden which entails serving beer, collecting money and checking IDs (maybe in the reverse order! HA! HA!). This will be the second year that the Club has operated this concession stand and from all accounts it was a lot of fun last year. In addition to having a good time and recruiting (Shane Best recruited Brian Beard in the garden last year) we receive a percentage of the sales, which will go into the Club coffers to offset the costs of the England Tour.
The Beer Garden is in Baker Park by the Armory and will operate from 11:00am to 9:00pm on Thursday July 4th. From 6:00pm to 9:00pm it will be the only Beer Garden in operation so will be VERY busy. It will be a lot of fun. So don’t miss out! Some of you would like to help out but didn't get a chance to talk to Chuck - please come down - the more the merrier.
Scheduled to Work
- Magnum, Shane, Tool Time, and Art should all be there most of the day (11 to ?)
- Teddy comes on from 1 to 4.
- Stu is scheduled from 4 to 9.
- Julian is scheduled from 4 to 7.
- Scott M. comes on from 4 to 6.
- Chad and Jess are scheduled from 6 to 9 along with Bentley
- Howard said he would be there from 6 to 7.
Frederick Rugby Annual Meeting (Dec 6th) Report
Posted: 12/19/01
Frederick Rugby held a very successful meeting on Thursday December 6th. A large number of topics were covered and there was a lot of discussion and interaction between the players in attendance. The idea behind holding this meeting was to find out what we need to do to ensure that Frederick Rugby Club continues to grow in the long term and what we need to do right now in order for us to move in the Championships this Spring. Some very good ideas came up and the atmosphere was very positive.
You can download the handout passed out at the meeting and download the summary/minutes. Thanks to all who attended and also thanks to the many players who let us know they could not attend due to prior commitments. This meeting was not the final word by any means, just somewhere to start so please don’t hesitate to bring your ideas forward.
Ravens Raffle Fundraiser
Posted: 11/26/01
Congratulations to Robert Reid of Thurmont who won the Ravens tickets raffle. Tommy Grunwell sold his son the ticket in the Elks Lodge. As well as Mr. Reid and his friends having a great time at the match (though if I recall I hope he was a Brown’s fan) the Club cleared just over $2000. Thanks to everyone who helped out by buying and selling tickets. Also thanks to Jay and Kathy Reeder for the tickets and Allen Byrne and Chuck Bare for running the raffle.
Romano Selected to MARFU
Posted: 11/19/01; Contributed by Lance French
After a strong performance this past weekend in the MARFU trials, Jamie Romano has been selected to the 2001 MARFU All Star Team. Jamie demonstrated solid rugby skills and rugby knowledge during the trail practices and secured his position in the heat of battle. During his two matches at inside center Jamie had several running opportunities that drove the defense off the gain line. And later in that same match he picked up his first try in select side action. And as for his defense, he was outstanding in his slide defensive coverage (and believe me, getting the outside center is not easy). The selectors particularly remembered a situation where an EPRU player had picked up a loose ball in open field only to be striped by Romano after a crushing hit. Jamie will participate in the NATIONAL TRAILS (ITT's) in front of the US Eagle selectors. The ITT's are the direct route to the US Eagles and is held every year between the 8 territorial all star teams. This year the trials will be held in Tampa Florida on Dec. 5th through the 9th. His selection is a tribute to both Jamie and to the Frederick Rugby Club. So, 3 cheers to Jamie and to his proud club Frederick. And to Art and Brian for attending the matches in support of their teammate.
Bus Trip Spring 2002 (North Jersey Memorial Match)
Posted: 04/04/02
Next week (Saturday April 13th) is the big bus trip up to Fain’s old Club, North Jersey. As you all know this match is a significant one. We are playing a memorial match for a fallen friend and we are starting up a new Club challenge. Each year we will play for a trophy and the match will serve as a fundraiser for either Pat O’Connell or Thomas Knox. This is also the weekend before our first play-off match so we will be playing the best available team in the first match and our B-side will be featuring players still keen to get into the 22 man championship squad. On a lighter note it is also a bus trip which will feature one of Al’s many owed kegs on the way back, a Rookie show and I’m sure a lot more!
If you didn’t have a chance to make Savannah, the bus trip is the next best thing for team building. You really don’t want to miss this trip.
Here are the details. The bus will leave the 7th Street parking area at 7:30am. This will happen whether you are there or not (as we need to be able to get up to North Jersey in time to properly stretch out). Please get there by 7:00am. The drive is approximately 4 hours long so you will have plenty of time to sleep or relax - just get on the bus!
Cost will be $30 a person (cash or checks made out to FRFC) that’s based on 30 people traveling (I hope we have more).
The bus should get back to Frederick around 11:30pm.
If you have to drive (try to avoid this if possible as it’s a LONG way) or you have friends in the area that would like to come along, please find directions below. The itinerary for the day will be as normal, A-side kick-off at 1:00pm, B-side to follow at 2:30pm. We’ll then get together with North Jersey for a party and the raffle draw (see prizes below). Then it’s back on the bus.

4 tickets to a Ravens game
Other prizes include:
2 tickets to an Orioles game
4 tickets to a Frederick keys game (thanks Pete)

The Home Matches
Posted: 03/05/02; Updated 04/01/02
If you refer to the schedule for Spring 2002, Frederick Rugby has three home matches. We are going to use these three days to celebrate rugby by tying in other collegiate, high school and old boy programs.
On Saturday March 23rd we will be playing an officiated intra-squad scrimmage (the Westmoreland Highlanders club from Pittsburgh folded). Frostburg College Rugby Club will play a curtain raiser match against Washington College at 10:30am. Frostburg gave us Tory Ireland, John Redmond and Walt Winn (among others) and have always been a physical bunch of guys. This year they have a New Zealander, Paul Marchbank, coaching the squad.
On Saturday April 6th we host Mon River, the WVU old boys team. The match will be played at Baker Park with the A-side kicking off at 1:00pm and the B-side to follow at 2:30pm. Frederick Rugby has a lot of WVU alumni including Art Hall, Chad Ogden, John Webber and Vinny Baker and Frederick won the Mon River sevens tournament in 2001. Mon River also has a former Frederick player, John Niles, with them. We are hoping to have Mount St. Marys play a curtain raiser against William & Mary and have the Frederick old boys team (FredEx) play a match after our B-side. Should be quite a day!
The last home match on April 20th is our biggest match of the season, the first round Mid-Atlantic Territorial play-off match against the Washington Irish. This match will be played at Mount Saint Mary’s in Emmitsburg. The A-side will kick off at 1:00pm with the B-side to follow. The Mount are also playing George Mason so will work their matches in with ours. The Mount rugby players are our closest friends and it is great to be able to play such an important match with the guys there to support us.

Frederick Banquet - Great Success: February 16th, Red Horse, Frederick
Posted: 02/20/02
Over 80 players, wives, girlfriends and old boys came together to toast Frederick Rugby on a very memorable evening. Governor Allen Byrne did a great job bringing everything together, from a very nice information package (thanks Chuck Bare), to running a rugby quiz (in which the current player team narrowly beat the Old Boys) and presenting the Club officers and friends for their contributions over the year. Director of Rugby Don Briggs was present to say a few words and thanked the Old Boys present for continuing to be part of the Club. Food was great (as always), thanks to Vice President John Fox for setting up the banquet and to Treasurer Stu Levine for managing the expenses.
The player award ceremony is always the biggest thing at the banquet. Captain Art Hall presided. The first two awards went to the Club’s best supporters, Allen Byrne and Chuck Bare. Besides traveling to the away matches and joining the team for the bus trip, both of these men have put in an immense amount of time and effort into organizing fundraisers and planning for our future success. The B-side best players were Ryan Jones in the Backs and Chad Ogden in the Forwards. Unfortunately Ryan has returned to college so is no longer available, but Chad will be a key player in the squad as we move towards the Mid-Atlantic Championships this season. Voted B-side MVP was the "every-ready, always finding a way to make it back" Webb. Most Improved was none other than "Special Boots" Tucci, who made an impact last fall. A special award was presented to Al Goetz in recognition of one of Al’s strengths. It was named the “Lumberjack” award, presented to the person most likely to lay the wood to an opponent - very well deserved Al! There were a number of very good recruits to the Club over the fall 2001 season, with several being A-side starters almost straight away. The Best New Guy award went to our storming center Troy Bartley (the first of many awards I’m sure). The A-side best players were the perennial winner Kenny Orndoff for the Backs and another new recruit (and soon to be Dad) Ben Pryor in the Forwards. Kenny is clearly one of our most valuable players, just think back to how relieved (no disrespect Fain) we were to hear than he would be making the Brandywine match and Ben has very quickly made the blind-side flanker position his own. In a bit of a surprise result I received the MVP award, which was very flattering.
This year was the first year the Club awarded the Pat O’Connell Memorial trophy. This trophy honors our good friend Pat and recognizes a person who has contributed to the Club. We were very fortunate to have Jill and two of Pat’s sisters (Terri and Madeleine) present the award. In what I can only describe as a very moving moment, I accepted the award. As I mentioned, the Club is very lucky to have a number of people who were equally deserving of this honor and I feel very privileged. We then got onto a lighter note with Jamie Romano and Magnum handing out some “alternative” awards including the “Bloody Boot” to Al Goetz and then the DJ took over. It was a great time and thanks to everyone for making it such a success. Check out some of the banquet photos.

USA Rugby has just announced the venues for all of the 2002 National Championship Tournaments (www.usarugby.org/cgi-bin/press/display.pl?releaseId=343). Rocky Gorge, Saturday March 30th
Posted: 03/26/02
This Saturday we travel for two matches against local rival Rocky Gorge of Laurel, MD. This team is always a handful. Their strength is in the loose; they are just great at mauling and stealing our ball. Last fall, Rob Smith got a hat trick and Frederick came out winners, 33-17. In the previous matchup, Fain Moran’s first match for us, Fain intercepted a pass and ran it back for the winning score - it was very close!
We will be playing two matches with the A-side kicking off at 1:00pm and the B-side to follow around 2:30pm. Please be at the field before 12:00 noon.
Rocky Gorge’s pitch is about 45 minutes from Frederick. If you would like to carpool, please be at the 7th Street pitch for 10:30am. Please find directions below:
Directions to Rocky Gorge
- Take I-70 west towards Baltimore
- Take Rt-29 south to Rt 100 south/west
- Take I-95 south towards Laurel, MD
- Take the exit for Route 198 west toward Burtonsville.
- Take a right at the 2nd light onto Bond Mill Road.
- Go several miles until the road ends.
- Take a right onto Brooklyn Bridge Road.
- Go about 1/2-mile and look for the fields on your left. Park in the lot or along the right-of-way.
Savannah Tour 2002 (Thursday March 14th - Monday March 18th)
Posted: 11/08/01
Well, I can’t believe that it’s time to start talking about Savannah again! Last time I talked to Darren “Dancing Bear” McCauslin, he was still recovering from 2001! What I can tell you is that we are participating in the Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Tournament 2002. The set-up will be like last year with matches on Friday and Sunday with a day off on Saturday to take in the parade (Tool will try to make it to noon before passing out this year) and I think we may want to revisit Mary’s Steakhouse (the friendliest restaurant in the world!). One good thing for Dud (and Jim) is that the hotel is even closer to downtown this year so if you get stranded it’s not quite so far to walk!
I have 4 rooms booked at the (yes you guessed it) Days Inn, Oglethorpe Mall/Southside 114 Mall Boulevard, Savannah, GA (912) 352-4455. The reservations are for Thursday March 14th, Friday March 15th, Saturday March 16th and Sunday March 17th. As of right now I’m anticipating leaving Frederick Thursday morning and leaving Savannah on Monday morning - but we can change that to returning Sunday afternoon if that would be better for people - let me know! Cost as of right now would be around $140 per person based on 25 people traveling and us renting two 15-passenger vans. If we work on a jersey (like last year which was a great idea) probably add in another $40. For an idea of what it’s like down in Savannah, check out the Savannah archived material here on the web page (Last Spring: Social photos, Match photos, and Match report) or check out the host club’s web page (www.savannahshamrocks.com). Last year I think we ended up taking too many people and that ended up in a few people not getting the amount of playing time that they had hoped for. I would like to suggest that we limit the number to 25 this year - might be good to get your name in to confirm your spot sooner rather than later!

We are looking to travel with a big squad to Richmond for our first match this Saturday. We will be playing two full matches, everyone will play and selections for both A-side and B-side will be announced on Thursday at practice. You will need to bring black shorts, black socks and a mouth guard, the jerseys will be provided for you. We will have water with us but it doesn't hurt to bring some more along. We'll be kicking off at 1:00. Players should be at the pitch an hour before kick-off and you should figure on the drive taking 2.5 to 3 hours from Frederick. If you want to carpool from Frederick please be at 7th Street at 8:30am. The Richmond pitch is NOT the same one we played on for MARFUs a couple of years ago. This pitch is on the north-west side of Richmond about 4 miles off I-95.

- Follow I-495 to I-95 south towards Richmond (20 miles).

- Take the Woodman Road SOUTH exit.
- Turn left at the first light onto Mountain Road.

Jan 26th: College and High School Rugby Camp
Posted: 12/19/01; Updated: 01/04/02
On Saturday January 26th 2002, Frederick Rugby and Mount Saint Mary’s College Rugby will host a rugby skills camp for college and high school age rugby players. The cost is $10 (which covers lunch at the college). This will be the third year of the camp. The aim is to bring Premier Division coaches to local college and high school programs and give them fresh approaches to drills and tactics. The camp will start at 8:00am and run to 4:30pm with a break for lunch. The emphasis is on constant movement, there is very little down time. The camp will be held indoors in the Mount gym and on the mount pitch (weather permitting).
8:30am - 10:30am: Coach John Redmond (Washington RFC)
11:00am - 12:00noon: Coach Lance French (PAC RFC)
12:00noon - 1:00pm: Lunch
1:00pm - 2:00pm: Coach Lance French (PAC RFC)
2:30pm - 4:30pm: Coach Mike Flanagan (Navy RFC)
For more information about the camp please contact Mount Saint Mary’s Head Coach Don Briggs directly (tepeyac@md.adelphia.net). This is a lot of fun and just another example of the role that Frederick Rugby is taking in developing youth rugby in our area.
Directions to Mount Saint Mary’s College:
- Take Rt-15 north to Emmitsburg.
- Turn left into the main College campus.
- Take your first left and follow signs to the gymnasium.
- Use any of the nearby parking areas.
