PRU Invitational Tournament: Saturday November 15th and Sunday November 16th
Posted: 10/14/03; Updated 11/10/03
PRU Invitational Tournament Overview:
The tournament will be an 8-team event seeding to be based on fall 2003 record. All teams will play two matches on Saturday (25 minute halves - the Saturday matches have been reduced to 25-minute halves to ensure that all matches are completed before dusk). The winners of the first matches will proceed to the PRU Cup semi-finals; the losers of the first matches will proceed to the PRU Shield semi-finals. On Sunday the PRU Shield final and PRU Cup final will be contested (40 minute halves). There will be two rugby pitches open on Saturday, one on Sunday.

The only cost will be a one-off $25 per team charge that will be used to pay for the PRU Cup and PRU Shield. The winners will pay for engraving and keep the hardware for one year and ensure the safe return of the PRU Cup and PRU Shield to the 2004 PRU Tournament.

Rocky Gorge RFC will provide the tournament venue; the pitches used for Slug 7’s in Laurel, Maryland, and make arrangements at Oliver’s for the Saturday post-tournament social.

Frederick Rugby will run the tournament, pay for the referees and provide the PRU Cup and PRU Shield trophies.

Bus Trip to Roanoke Match (Saturday, November 1st)
Posted: 10/15/03
As Roanoke is a long way south of Frederick (about 4 hours) we are making this a bus trip. The bus will leave 7th Street at 7:30am and will return by 10:00pm.

If we get 40 people to travel the cost will be $35 a person – not bad and a lot more comfortable than cramming into a bunch of cars.

As Chad eluded, there is “Rookie Show” fun to be had on the way home – you have a few weeks to work on that (and maybe translate for “Little” Louis – as opposed to “Big” Lou!).

I have included the direction below just for interest – make the bus trip!

    Directions to Roanoke:
    (230 miles from Frederick – 4 hours)
  • Take Rt-15 south to Rt-340 south (6 miles)
  • Follow Rt-340 south into Virginia to VA-7 west (33 miles)
  • Take VA-7 west to I-81 south (9 miles)
  • Take I-81 south to Roanoke (172 miles)
  • Take I-581 south/US220 south exit 143 towards the airport/Roanoke (6 miles)
  • Take the Elm Avenue/VA-24 exit 6, turn right at the light on the ramp and follow to 5th Street (5 lights)
  • Turn left (south) on 5th Street.
  • Go to the second stop sign (the first is a 4-way stop the second a 5-way stop)
  • Take the road in the 2 o-clock position into Highland Park.
  • Park at the bottom of the hill, the pitch is at the top of the hill

  • Need to get there by 11:30am so leave Frederick at 7:30am. Leave Roanoke at 6:00pm so would be home for 10:00pm. That’s 14.5 hours.

Frederick hosts Norfolk at the Warner Farm, Saturday - September 27
Posted: 09/22/03
A former Frederick Rugby player, Jonathon Warner has just constructed a rugby pitch on his farm in Dickerson, a small town about 30 minutes southwest of Frederick. This is where we will host Norfolk. Obviously as this is not only a rugby pitch but someone’s home please treat the place with respect. In addition to playing the two matches (A-side kick-off at 1:00pm with the B-side to follow at 2:30pm). The post-match social will be held at the farm following the matches. This should be a great day and if things go well, we may be able to have other matches at this pitch in the future.

The directions below are from Frederick. The Germantown people may be able to get to Dickerson by using Clopper Road (Rt-117) then Rt-109, but I would suggest you use Mapquest or some other program as the roads back there look pretty small.

Directions to Jonathon Warner’s farm, 20500 Martinsburg Road, Dickerson, MD from Frederick:
  • Take Rt-85/Buckeystown Pike south (10 miles).
  • Rt-85 south will become Rt-28 south (5 miles).
  • Enter Montgomery County and pass through the small town of Dickerson.
  • About a mile past the town Rt-28 makes a 90-degree left turn (flashing orange light).
  • Keep straight to turn onto Martinsburg Road.
  • The farm is about 3 miles up on the right.
  • The road becomes a one lane concrete road - follow signs for warm water fishing.
  • Pass Dickerson Conservation Park on the right go up the hill and the farm is on the right.

Memorial Match & Golf Tournament - April 26-27
Posted: 04/01/03
Guys...I wanted to send out a quick email to update everyone about this year’s memorial rugby match on Saturday April 26th in Baker Park, Frederick. We are going to dedicate this year to the memory of our Coach Jim Ford and teammate Pat O'Connell. I have talked to Laurel and Jill and they have both decided to give all of the proceeds to support our troops overseas. The charity is the USO (United Service Organization). Check out and share the Flyer.

In addition to hosting North Jersey Rugby Club for two matches on the Saturday with a Frederick Old Boys match to follow, we will be staging a golf tournament on Sunday April 27th at Glade Valley in Frederick. The weekend will be a lot of fun and a great tribute to both Jim and Pat, let’s honor them by collecting as much money as possible for this very appropriate cause.

Saturday 26th April, Baker Park, Frederick:
1:00pm Frederick ‘A’ verses North Jersey ‘A’
2:30pm Frederick ‘B’ verses North Jersey ‘B’
4:00pm FredEx verses Old Boys
5:30pm Party (venue TBD)

As part of the festivities on Saturday burgers, hot dogs and soft drinks will be available. Donations for food will be collected for the USO. A 50:50 raffle will also be organized, bagpipers will be present and hopefully a lot of walk-by traffic will be introduced to rugby. Although the venue for the after match party has not been confirmed it will be close to Baker Park and will be a great time.

Sunday 27th April, Glade Valley, Frederick:
We will be running a golf tournament at Glade Valley in Frederick starting at 10:00am. The cost per person will be $60 with $20 being donated to the USO. I need to confirm by Friday April 11th the number of players and pay ahead, so please e-mail me, call me or tell me at practice if you are playing. For those of you who are not avid golfers, don't worry; we will probably be playing a scramble type tournament (best ball). I am going to get some flyers so that if any co-workers, friends, etc want to play you can give them something with all of the information. As well as players we are looking for hole sponsors so please help out.

With everything currently going on in Iraq, hopefully the community will be generous with donations. It really is a very timely cause and we all have friends and relatives involved in the conflict, for example Radar’s wife Elizabeth Looney is out in Afghanistan and James “Doc” Oliverio is in Iraq. I decided not to do a raffle and bother everyone with selling tickets but I do need help with getting donations from people’s work, family and friends. As mentioned earlier, the charity is the USO and it is fully tax deductible to either companies or individuals. Checks made out to USO or Frederick Rugby (with USO Donation on the description line) or cash are all acceptable.

I can't tell you all how much it was appreciated when North Jersey and Frederick raised nearly $10,000 last year to assist the family of Tommy Knox, a great Jersey player who was killed in the 9/11 attack. This year we are supporting the families of a former player and our former coach, please help in any way possible. We still have 4 weeks if anybody has any other ideas to raise some money, let me know.

Thanks...Fain Moran (fainfpduffy@aol.com or 301/748-9369)

Wilmington Saturday 5th April: Information and Directions
Posted: 04/01/03
This Saturday is our last match before the play-offs against a strong Wilmington side. Wilmington was just one point away from qualifying for MARFU from the northern division. This will be a tough challenge for us and I hope that we can bring a strong squad for both matches. Wilmington is about 30 minutes closer to Frederick than Media; the directions should be pretty familiar. Please note that you need to stay on I-95 (don’t use the I-695 bypass in Wilmington) and there are road works on I-95 just coming up to US-202 (repaving). I would like to get everyone to the pitch by 11:30am so that we can have our boots on and be stretched for 12:00 noon. Please leave ample time in case you get lost or delayed by the road works.

Wilmington plays at the PS DuPont Middle School about 2 miles off I-95 in downtown Wilmington. The drive will take about 2.5 hours. If you want to carpool, please be at 7th Street before 9:00am.

Directions to Wilmington (P S DuPont Middle School, 601 W 34th Street, Wilmington, DE):
  • Take I-70 to Baltimore (38 miles)
  • Take I-695 north (towards Towson) (21 miles)
  • Take I-95 north (62 miles)
  • Take the US-202/Concord Pike exit #8 towards Wilmington/West Chester (south)
  • Keep right at the fork in the ramp and travel south on Concord Pike (0.1 miles)
  • Turn left at the first traffic light onto N Broom Street (Broom Street becomes Miller Road) (0.5 miles)
  • Turn right at the second light onto W 34th Street (0.3 miles)
  • Proceed through a stop sign; pitch and parking (at the school) are on the left

Severn River Sunday 30th March: Information and Directions
Posted: 03/26/03
This Sunday we play our snow-postponed league match against Severn River. Rocky Gorge has been playing well this spring and have their last league match hosting Norfolk on Saturday 29th. If they win they will move ahead of us in the seeding for MARFU, we want a convincing win here to reestablish our play-off slot. We just have the one match but if you can come along to support or be available as a substitute you would be a real help. We will play a full 22-man squad. Kick-off is at 1:00pm. Same as for Media, please get there for 11:30am. If you wish to carpool, please be at 7th Street before 10:00am. This will give us 90 minutes to get to Annapolis and 30 minutes to change. If you are traveling directly, please see the directions below.
    Directions to Severn River:
  • Take I-70 East to Rt-29
  • Take Rt-29 South (Columbia/Washington) to Rt-100
  • Take Rt-100 East to Glenn Burnie
  • Take Rt-2/Ritchie Highway South towards the Bay Bridge
  • Turn left onto Jones Station Road (Amoco and Crown gas stations on corner)
  • Go left behind the Crown gas station (Manhattan Beach Road)
  • Pitch is 1/2 mile on left (American Legion Post 175)

  • Total distance is 67 miles please figure on 90 minutes travel time.

Media Saturday 29th March: Information and Directions
Posted: 03/26/03
This weekend we have a lot of rugby to play starting with two matches away to Media on Saturday. Media’s home field is at Cheyney University, in Cheyney, P.A. We did travel there in a bus a couple of years ago for those of you with good memories. The pitch is a bit lumpy and has a definite slope down towards one goal. The first match will kick-off at 1:00pm, the second to follow around 2:30pm. I would like to get everyone to the pitch by 11:30am so that we can have our boots on and be stretched for 12:00 noon. Please leave ample time in case you get lost, feel hungry, run out of gas or any other unlikely circumstance should occur.

Cheyney University is 180 miles from Frederick and the drive will take about 3 hours. If you want to carpool, please be at 7th Street before 8:30am.

Directions to Media (Cheyney University, Cheyney, P.A.):
  • Take I-70 to Baltimore (38 miles)
  • Take I-695 north (towards Towson) (21 miles)
  • Take I-95 north (62 miles)
  • Take the US-202/Concord Pike exit #8 towards Wilmington/West Chester (north)
  • Concord Pike becomes Wilmington West Chester Pike then US-202/US-322 (11 miles)
  • Turn right onto E. Street Road (PA-926) (3 miles)
  • Turn right onto Cheyney Road, field is on your right (less than 1 mile)

Saturday March 22nd Frederick at Harrisburg
Posted: 03/19/03
We have two big matches this Saturday in Harrisburg, the first kicking off at 1:00pm the second to follow (around 2:30pm). We are still working on some combinations; everyone will get plenty of playing time. We do have a few players out with injury and another couple will probably get lost so please get there early for the first match. Please be at the Harrisburg pitch (boots on and warmed up by 12:00 noon).

The pitch is going to be very muddy and it’s not exactly a polo ground, so bring your big cleats, a lot of tape for your ankles and some clean clothes for after the match.

The journey from Frederick should take about 90 minutes so allow a good two hours to factor in slow traffic on Rt-15 north. If you want to carpool please be at 7th Street by 9:30am.

    Directions to Harrisburg:
  • Take Rt-15 north to Harrisburg
  • Pass I-76 (Penna Turnpike)
  • Take Rt-581 east to I-83 north across the river
  • Take I-283 east/south and bear left on PA-283 (follow signs to Harrisburg International Airport)
  • Take the airport connector south
  • Turn left on Rt-230 (Middletown exit)
  • Penn State Capitol Campus is about 1 mile up on your left
  • Turn into the campus and park in the first parking lot to the left
  • The field is on the next hill

  • If you want to use a map program to find a direct route use the following address: 20 College Avenue, Middletown, PA

FINALLY we get to have some actual rugby matches! As usual we will be playing two matches, an A-side that kicks off at 1:00pm and a B-side to follow around 2:30pm. This is a league match we want to win. We will be fielding two strong sides; selection to the A-side will be mainly on fitness.

We'll be kicking off at 1:00. Players should be at the pitch an hour before kick-off and you should figure on the drive taking 2.5 to 3 hours from Frederick. If you want to carpool from Frederick please be at 7th Street at 8:30am. The Richmond pitch is the same one we played on last year. This pitch is on the northwest side of Richmond about 4 miles off I-95. If you want to use a map program the actual address is 2204 Mountain Road, Glen Allen, VA 23060-2232.

Scoring Summary for Fall 2002
Posted: 01/24/03
As we prepare for the spring 2003 campaign in the cold of a Maryland winter I thought it would be interesting to cast a look back on the fall 2002 season and see who were the offensive threats at the Atlantic Cup beach tournament and the England tour. Who scored the most tries? Who slotted the most conversions? Which prop came in at 4th on the try-scoring list? The summary table below might surprise you.

The season got underway at the Atlantic Cup with Tobin Triebel crossing for the first try of the fall against North Bay (I don’t think that any of us expected it to also be his last score of the season!). The home match against Roanoke was a high scoring affair with Peter Goto recording the first hatrick of the season and Kenny Orndoff slotting 7 of 10 conversions. Jamie Romano was the first to score in England, a try against Dorking in the 5th minute. Kenny Orndoff was the last to score in England with a touchline conversion in the 85th minute at Avon. In between, Bryce Cox scored his first and second tries - ever! Fain Moran achieved his hatrick at Happy Valley. Pete Ireland and John Astill waited until the last match of the season, Western Suburbs, to get on the board and Brian Taormina - leading try scorer of the season - dotted down the last score of the year against Suburbs.

Who will be the big scorers for us this spring? I wonder.
