Mid-Atlantic All-Star Schedule
Posted: 09/22/04
At the end of the fall rugby season, players are given the opportunity to try-out for the Mid-Atlantic (MARFU) select or All-Star squad. This team participates in the inter-territorial tournament in Florida (ITT) where the US national coaches and scouts look to add to the Eagle player pool. I strongly support any player wishing to further their rugby development and a number of Frederick players including Dave Gentzel, Peter Ireland, Kenny Orndoff, Jamie Romano, Art Hall and Brian Taormina have played big parts in the MARFU squad.

The player selection trials in each of the three LAUs, Eastern Pennsylvania (EPRU), Virginia (VRU) and Potomac (PRU) will begin in October. Frederick is a member of the PRU. All players are encouraged to go to the trials (usually on Sundays) and participate in the program. Last year, the MARFU moved to the top tier with a strong performance at the All-Star tournament and now their goal is to win the national title.

Last year was also the first year that the players did not have to spend their own money and this year it will be the same thanks to financial support from MARFU. In reality this money comes partly from your club dues as each rugby club pays MARFU dues of around $1,000 per year – just another reason to participate, you are paying for somebody to go to Florida, it may as well be you!

Peter Steinberg will coach the EPRU; Chris Porter will head the VRU, while Bernie Hogan (Washington head coach), Gerry MacDonald (Eagle prop and Potomac Athletic Club forwards coach) and Cam Dunlap (PAC) will most likely coach the PRU. Lance French, currently coaching at Frederick RFC, will join as head coach of the combined MARFU team headed to Florida in December.

The three Unions will play each other in regulation matches on the last two weekends in October with the goal of announcing the MARFU All-Star team before the New Zealand Ambassador’s match. Every year, the New Zealand Embassy recruits Kiwi’s from all over the USA to play the MARFU, and until last year, the kiwis had never lost.

Following the New Zealand Ambassadors match, the MARFU will head north to play the Northeast Rugby Territory in New Jersey, while the last scheduled event for the MARFU, prior to the All-Star weekend, is still to be determined.

    MARFU schedule:
Oct 10 - PRU, VRU, EPRU (training)
Oct 17 - PRU, VRU, EPRU (training)
Oct 24 - MARFU matches (PRU, VRU, EPRU)
Oct 31 - MARFU matches (PRU, VRU, EPRU)
    Nov 6 - MARFU training
    Nov 7 - NZ Ambassador's Shield match
    Nov 13 - MARFU v NERU (Monmouth)
    Nov 20 - MARFU camp
Dec 2/5 – ITT (Orlando, FL)

Rob Smith's European vacation
Posted: 07/06/04; Updated 07/29/04
Just a note to let you all know that Rob Smith is currently in Europe as the #1 scrum half for the US Army as they tour through France and the Czech Republic. Their first match is against the Czech national side on Sunday July 11th - see link (http://www.rugby.cz/english/).

I will keep you updated as I receive information from Rob.

July 17th 2004:
We played well against the French last night but went down 41 - 18. They were by far the best team. We played at the National Training Center just outside of Paris and their hospitality was excellent. While our record was 2-3, all the opponents were top select sides. Our team was in every game and played very competitively.

Tour summary:
USCS 16 Amsterdam 7
USCS 31 Scottish Army Selects 0
USCS 7 Prague National Team 16
USCS 7 Germany Bad Wurttemberg State Team 29
USCS 18 French Military National side 41

July 15th 2004:
The Germans put a hurting on us last night. The team just didn’t gel. When the fullback made a 45-meter drop goal from the right side line, we knew we were in for a long game! It was especially disappointing for me because I was getting hammered at the rucks and it hurt my service to the backs. Just shows you that blowing over the rucks gets you nowhere and your scrumhalf hurt. I had a minor concussion and a loose tooth at the 80. Final score was German selects 29, USCS 7. Off to France to play the French military select side.

July 11th 2004:
We suffered our first defeat yesterday. We lost 7-16 to the Czech national team. They were very large and had great skills. We had a lot of knock ons and penalties. We could have won this match but the errors really hurt us. They threw us a good party after the match. Today we went to the U.S. Ambassador's residence and had lunch with him. He was a great guy and made us feel really welcome. Tonight we have court to punish infractions players have made. Should be a long night. Tomorrow we travel to Heidelberg to prepare for the match against RBW, the select side I played for in Germany. -Rob

July 10th 2004:
We were supposed to play the Polish national team yesterday, but they went on strike. They had a list of demands that the union could not resolve. The union is pissed because they spent some money promoting the match. So we are in Prague and the play the Czech national team tomorrow evening. Practice went well today, and we will be on all cylinders tomorrow. Will let you know the outcome ASAP. The food and beer here are excellent! -Rob

July 9th 2004:
Well we were pretty stoked to play the Royal Scots yesterday. Two thirds of the team were Fijian. It was a bad night for them, we won 31 to 0. Our defense was excellent, and our forwards pushed them around. it was a good warm up before the Czech game in a few days. That will be a real test and everyone is up for it. No try for me yesterday, but maybe in a few days! -Rob

July 7th 2004:
We are in Amsterdam. We played the Dutch Div 1 club champions, Amstelveen RC, last night. I was a reserve for that game. The Dutch side was very good, full of foreigners. Their fly half had a really good boot. Our Forwards dominated in the loose, but need to get tighter in the scrum. Lineouts were good. Our backs played a very solid defense. I got in for the last 10 minutes, and scored the last try to win 17 to 7.

We leave this morning to play the British Army select side in the north of Germany. The weather has been great and the beer is even better! Will drop you another line later. -Rob

Atlantic Cup Tournament: August 21st and 22nd
Posted: 07/14/04; Updated 08/02/04
The fall season will open with what has become a tradition for Frederick Rugby, the Atlantic Cup Tournament in Lewes, Delaware (close to Dewey Beach, north of Ocean City). This is a fun weekend, really a mini-tour, with at least three matches (everyone who travels will play) and the opportunity to hang out at the Dewey Beach bars with your teammates. As this is a beach tournament there’s plenty to do outside of rugby so wives and girlfriends will have a good time. The Club (or rather Stax) has reserved 4 rooms for Friday 20th and Saturday 21st at the Sea Esta IV motel right by the bars in Dewey Beach (may be a bad idea from a coaching perspective but at least nobody needs to drive in the evening!). With 4 in a room, it works out to about $90 per person for the weekend. If you are bringing someone you will need to make your own booking.

Information: Four rooms reserved under Jeff Carrington.

CAN-AM RUGBY TOURNAMENT
Posted: 06/01/04
Begining Sunday June 6th and continuing through the last weekend of July the "Old-Boys" are going to have informal rugby "work outs" (HA HA) every Sunday at 1:00 at the field behind Frederick High School. Maybe we'll play league, maybe touch 7's, maybe we'll just try to stretch for 10-20 minutes while talking about how good we used to be, then go get a burger and beer. We could all use a little activity before we play some serious rugby in Saranac, so make a serious effort to be there. All are invited...not just old boys, not just those traveling to Saranac.

If you want to go or are thinking of going, or have any questions about these "work outs" call Ed Shafer his number is 301-473-7576 or e-mail Wilki at dave@macroltd.com

A look ahead to the Fall 2004 Schedule
Posted: 05/07/04
In order to realize the great potential we have at Frederick Rugby we cannot afford to take the summer off. To improve individually and as a squad we have organized a full training schedule through the summer, including some social events and tournaments. The club that works and plays together wins together.

Please mark these dates on your calendar and commit to the upcoming season. You have the chance to achieve something special – but it takes focus and sacrifice. It is essential that we have all of our players available this fall in order to get a good seed going into the spring play-offs. The schedule is a good one – the only long away trip is to Norfolk – plan on going down Friday afternoon like we did for the play-offs. When the schedule is confirmed (sometime in June) the web page will be updated.

The Atlantic Cup is our traditional kick-off to the season – make sure that you attend (we will be in D1 again).

Frederick All-ACL 7s Jerseys - Taking Orders
Posted: 03/11/04; Submitted by Vince Baker
I know it's been a pricey spring already (dues, savannah, bar tabs...), but fortunately I'm not asking for money - yet. I'm getting the jersey order together for the "ACL 7s" side this summer, so please respond (oldmarley@hotmail.com) if interested (just yes/no, will get sizes/jersey numbers later). Purchasing the jersey is open to everyone. The logo design is set and the jersey itself will vary depending on the level of interest. And they will NOT be Frederick colors, so you can broaden your wardrobe beyond the myriad of green/black/white jerseys already there. The cost should be in the $40-50 range, possibly a touch more.

You can follow these links to the two jersey options being considered:

Frederick Rugby to run YMCA youth rugby clinic on 24th July - Cancelled
Posted: 06/07/04
Our club is organizing two Youth Rugby Skills Clinics through the Frederick YMCA.  The goal is to test the level of community interest in rugby, and, hopefully, spark a youth league in Frederick - either through the YMCA or PRU.  The proceeds from these clinics will be donated to the YMCA's Financial Assistance Program, which will benefit all YMCA programs.  The first clinic will be held on Saturday July 24th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (details below) and the second will run in October.  If you know boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 12, please run this by their parents.  Parents can call Ron Averill, the Youth Athletic Director at the YMCA (301/663-5131 ext. 223) to register.  It will be a great time.
Also, we need help in a few areas:
  1. We need at least 8 coaching assistants to help run the camp.  Please notify Steve Schleupner (steven_schleupner@ml.com) if you are interested in helping.
  2. This is a charitable offering we're doing to give back to the community and we will work to get newspaper exposure for the club.  If you would like to make a donation, even if it's as small as $5, please see Pete Ireland or myself.  The more money we can raise the better.
  3. We need a few more - at least 3 - T-shirt sponsors.  If you think your company would be willing to help, it's only $100 for sponsorship.
  4. Please forward this information to old boys, rugby lovers and friends with local clubs.
Youth Rugby Skills Clinic Information

Clinic outline: Rugby is a rapidly growing sport in the U.S. and is played on almost every college campus and in many cities across the U.S. In fact, there is a team in our own hometown. The Frederick Rugby Club will be assisting the YMCA with the Youth Rugby Skills Clinic. Rugby is a particularly good sport for kids because every player is able to pass, kick, run and score with the ball. Geared toward boys and girls ages 9 to 12, this instructional clinic will introduce the student to the fundamentals necessary to play the game. The clinic is broken into three sessions, each building upon the previous skill(s) learned. During the first session, the kids will learn the rules of the game through interaction with instructors and the viewing of instructional videos. Next, they will learn fundamental rugby skills, including but not necessarily limited to: passing, kicking and running with the ball. After lunch, the instructors will divide the kids into teams and the kids will take the field for a two-hand touch scrimmage. During this scrimmage the kids will be able to apply the skills they learned during the morning sessions

Mount Rugby Clinic - July 17
Posted: 07/06/04
Frederick has very close ties with the Mount Saint Mary’s College rugby team through Coach Don Briggs (formerly Head Coach of Frederick Rugby) and current players Teddy Thompson, Phil Rothschild and Derek Zornow. This will be the second year that we have run a joint mini-camp to get a jump on preseason training and try to align the two programs by introducing defensive and offensive patterns.

For this year’s clinic we will have Kevin Fraser as a guest coach to run a scrum session – then referee the Frederick v Mount Saint Mary’s scrimmage sessions. Kevin is a great friend of the club and can give us some real insights to forward play - an area that we need to improve ahead of the fall campaign.

The clinic will run from 10:30am to 2:00pm and round out with a social at the Ott House (a pub in Emmitsburg). Everyone is encouraged to attend – this will be a good work out and a lot of fun.

    Outline for the Mount clinic:
  • 10:30am – 11:00am: League
  • 11:00am – 12:30pm: Coaching sessions
  • 12:30pm – 2:00pm: Scrimmage sessions

  • Directions to Mount Saint Mary’s (about 25 minutes north of Frederick):
  • Take Rt-15 north to Emmitsburg
  • Turn left into Mount Saint Mary’s main campus
  • The pitch is on your immediate right
  • Please park in the parking lots adjacent to the pitch (don’t park on the grass)

USA v France in July
Posted: 06/02/04
Coach Lance French will be assisting the US national squad as they prepare to host France in Connecticut this July. Lance has a connection to get cheap tickets and I’m sure some behind-the-scenes access. If you would like to make the trip please contact Lance directly (Lfrench@Kronos.com).

Rentschler Stadium To Host USA vs. France Match, July 3
USA Rugby has announced that the highly anticipated USA/France international fixture will be hosted at Rentschler Field the new 40,000 seat home of the University of Connecticut's Division I football team, in Hartford, Connecticut on Saturday July 3. Kick-off is set for 1:00pm local time.

The powerful French National Rugby Team is the reigning 2004 European champion, and has not lost a match to the Eagles since the founding of USA Rugby in 1976. The Eagles last played France on Oct. 31, 2003 in competition at the 2003 World Cup in Australia, when France defeated the Eagles, 41-14.

Head Coach Tom Billups says the Eagles have a healthy respect for the strength of the French team, and are anticipating this match as one of their most difficult of the 2004 competition season.

“There are no cracks in the French team due to their professional domestic competition,” said Billups. “They are very well-coached, physically and mentally prepared, and they benefit from regular participation in the strongest of international competition. They play the game with courage and elements of the unexpected, yet their team is founded in the ability to perform the basics very well.

“That said, our American boys are absolutely up for the challenge,” said Billups. “Our build up to the French test will include participating in the Super Cup and Churchill Cup. The Super Cup, held this year in Tokyo, gives us the opportunity to play against the Canadians and either the Russians or host Japan. The Churchill Cup, played only a few weeks before the French test, will see us play against the New Zealand Maori, and either England or Canada.”

Frederick Rugby to run July 4th Beer Tent in Baker Park
Posted: 06/07/04
We will be manning a beer tent again this year on Sunday the 4th of July as part of Frederick City’s Independence Day celebrations. This is a lot of fun, generates serious funds for the club and is great exposure for Frederick Rugby.  As the 4th falls on a Sunday this year we will all have an extra day off because the work holiday will be Monday – so please get involved and help your club out. For a look at the events going on in Baker Park, please click here.

If you will be able to help, send an email to organizer Chuck Bare (chbare@adelphia.net) with the approximate times you will be available.  The beer tent will run all afternoon and evening – until the fireworks at 9:00pm. As in years past, we need more help from 6:00 to 9:00 PM than earlier in the day.  Those of you in law enforcement will be especially valuable checking ID’s at the gate.

Posted: 03/18/04; Updated 03/23/04
On Tuesday March 23rd our local youth rugby club, the New Windsor Marauders are hosting the touring Welsh youth team from Pwllheli. As we will be playing the senior Pwllheli squad on Wednesday March 24th and both youth programs will be helping Frederick Rugby run a youth clinic after our match, we will cancel Tuesday training and I encourage everyone to go along and support the youth players.

The Pwllheli v New Windsor youth match has been shifted to a new location (New Windsor Middle School) and will now kick-off at 5:00pm (the Marauders just lost their floodlit field).

The Pwllheli vs Frederick match and youth clinic scheduled for tomorrow are both unaffected.

Frederick Rugby's Home matches – All the info
Posted: 02/27/04; Updated 03/11/04
Welcome to Frederick Rugby’s spring 2004 campaign.

All of our home matches, except for the May 22 Match to be held at a yet to be determined location, will be played at the Baker Park pitch (Directions). This materializes early on Saturday mornings next to the bell tower and armory in Baker Park. Our sincere thanks go out to the Frederick city sports and recreation department for permitting us access to the park while our future home at Walnut Ridge is being constructed.

Frederick play two matches each Saturday, the A-side (comprised of the more experienced players) kicks off at 1:00pm and the B-side (a mixture of new players and experienced guys who can’t make all the practices) follows at 2:30pm. The post-match social for players, referees and spectators follows at around 4:30pm. Occasionally we will have guest teams play a curtain raiser at 11:30am, please check the schedule for that information. In addition, this season we are hosting a team from Wales and will play them at Baker Park on a Wednesday afternoon – kick-off at 3:00pm. Occasionally due to inclement weather we use a different pitch at Mount Saint Mary’s College in Emmitsburg. Please check in with the website before each match to confirm the venue.

Players are required to be at the pitch, ready to warm-up by 12:00 noon, spectators are very welcome to support the teams and also to enjoy the camaraderie that is rugby in the pub for the post-match social.

Frederick play in black socks and black shorts and green and black jerseys. The club provides match day jerseys, players need to have their own shorts, socks, boots/cleats, mouthguards and any other additional protective equipment. Also, please bring water.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact Julian Reading, Head Coach. I look forward to seeing you on the pitch or cheering on the sidelines this season.

Savannah Division 1 Update
Posted: 02/11/04; Updated 03/08/04
Frederick has two teams entered in the Savannah St. Patrick’s Day tournament, one in D1 and a second (in conjunction with Western Suburbs) WestFred in D2. This arrangement gives us a chance to really test our A-side players ahead of the play-offs and also give our development and new players plenty of match time. The D1 teams are starting to sign-up and there will be some very stiff competition. To see the full list of tournament entries visit the Savannah Shamrocks site. So far the following squads have entered the tournament in D1:
  • Cincinnati Wolfhounds
  • Air Force
  • Atlanta Renegades
  • Schuylkill River
  • Lockport Rugby Touring Side

Jan 31st: College and High School Rugby Camp
Posted: 12/12/03
On Saturday January 31st 2003, Frederick Rugby and Mount Saint Mary’s College Rugby will host a rugby skills camp for college and high school age rugby players. Colleges attending include Mount Saint Mary’s and Loyola; high school programs include Linganore, New Windsor and Maryland Exiles. The camp will start at 8:00am and run to 3:00pm with a break for lunch. The emphasis is on constant movement, there is very little down time. The camp will be held indoors in the Mount gym and on the Mount pitch (weather permitting). This is a great way to promote Frederick Rugby in the rugby community and is a lot of fun. Assistant coaches are needed, please mark your calendars and get involved.

The clinic costs $10, which covers lunch in the college cafeteria. For more information on the clinic please contact Mount Saint Mary’s Head Coach Don Briggs (tepeyac@erols.com).

Directions to Mount Saint Mary’s College:
  • Take Rt-15 north to Emmitsburg.
  • Turn left into the main College campus.
  • Take your first left and follow signs to the gymnasium.
  • Use any of the nearby parking areas. (25 minutes from Frederick)

Savannah 2004!
Posted: 11/24/03; Updated 01/27/04
The Savannah Tournament this spring will be played on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th of March. As of right now we have one Division I team entered and will look to take a squad of 22 players. If there is sufficient interest we can also enter a Division II side in conjunction with Western Suburbs, WestFred.

I want this tournament to be inclusive and fun, but I cannot afford to field two squads from 25 players. That will only increase the chance for injury – this season has made this reality very clear.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Savannah Tournament we drive down (9 hours) to Savannah from Frederick. This year, we will be renting a 10-man van and an RV, traveling down on Friday 12th March and returning Sunday 14th March. Stax has booked us rooms in the Hilton in downtown Savannah just one block from River Street. This does make it a bit more expensive than normal. The games are close to downtown Savannah; the party is on River Street.

Hilton Savannah DeSoto
15 East Liberty Street, Savannah, GA 31401
Tel: 1-912-232-9000
http://www.hilton.com/en/hi/hotels/index.jhtml?ctyhocn=SAVDHHF

Here are the basics (per person):

Leave Friday 12th and return on Sunday 14th:
  • You will need to take Friday off work.
  • Hotel cost (5 per room): $100
  • Van rental (10 per van): $60
  • Tour jersey: $40
  • Grand Total: $200

Please get back with Julian ASAP and let him know if you can make the tour (jreading@erols.com). Please also let Julian know if you will be in the rugby vans and rooms or if you will be traveling and staying independently. All the hotel information is above should you wish to book directly. If you are aiming to play in the A-side this spring you should attend so please sort out your leave and savings.

National Sweet16: MARFU retains both seeds
Posted: 11/21/03
Although MARFU teams have not done too well in the National Sweet-16 for the past couple of years, our territory has retained both of its seeds. This means that both MARFU finalists will progress to the national tournament. MARFU #1 is national #11 and MARFU #2 is national #13 (see the USA Rugby link - http://www.usarugby.org/cgi-bin/02/championships/show.pl?competitionId=93).

Although those seeds seem daunting, just remember that in 1998 when Frederick reached the final we were the only MARFU seed, national #14. Although the venues for the Sweet-16 have not been announced, the Final-4 will be in Pittsburgh once again.

Obviously before the nationals there is the small matter of winning our MARFU Elite-8 and Final-4 matches. Although there are a few matches outstanding in the south (to be played in the spring) our fate is basically sealed. We will either play Washington Irish or Norfolk and then the winner of either Washington Irish or Norfolk verses Rocky Gorge. We will not see a division II north team until the MARFU final. To my mind this is a very good schedule ahead of the nationals. All of these teams are playing well and there is no point reaching the nationals on the back of some easy wins. If we are not good enough to progress through the best division II south MARFU teams, we do not belong at the national Sweet-16.

Please see the tournament dates for spring 2004 below. You need to be peaking on April 17th – please gear your training and focus on that date.

Date Tournament
Apr 17 MARFU Elite-8
24/25 MARFU Final 4
May 15/16 National Sweet 16
Jun 5/6 National Final 4

Frederick Rugby's 2nd Annual House Crawl - February 21, 2004
Posted: 02/12/04; Submitted by Magnum

Hear Ye .........Hear Ye....... Using the responses I received from everyone, the time and date has been set for this years HOUSE CRAWL. This years Crawl will be:

    Saturday February 21st, 2004
Beginning at 715 North Market St., Frederick, MD @ 2:00 PM.

For those of you new to the Crawl or for those that were too drunk to remember last year, here are the details. The Crawl will begin at my house from 2-4 PM. From there we will move through the streets of Frederick visiting the friendly souls who have offered their home to us. Each house will be responsible for one mixed drink of choice, where we will spend about an hour or so.

This is a great opportunity to meet and greet with your fellow teammates and friends, while taking in the local flavor. As always everyone is welcome. Please feel free to invite friends, family, wives, husbands, and random hot chicks. Plan to dress for the weather........nor rain, snow, or drunks in the night will hold us back!

I feel this is a great way to start another great season.......I look forward to seeing you all. More information and a detailed agenda for the night is forthcoming.

Winter Banquet set for the Red Horse - January 24, 2004
Posted: 11/11/03
One of the best traditions of Frederick Rugby is the annual winter banquet. This year's banquet will be held on Saturday January 24th at the Red Horse on Rt-40 in Frederick. This is a great opportunity to get our non-playing members back involved with the Club as well as giving wives and girlfriends an opportunity to actually meet the new guys in our Club. The fall season player awards will be presented as well. Get your money or checks to Julian if you haven't yet reserved/paid - $35 a person (that includes food and beer).
