OLD GAELIC CLASSIC?
Fourteen groggy Frederick Rugby players rolled out of their cars at 9.15am on Saturday 17th May straight
onto the field to play a prepared Harrisburg team. Apart from a great individual effort by New Wave running
from our 22, pop-kicking over the defense and recovering for a try, and the disgusting Harrisburg Hooker
with blood and bandages hanging out of his nose all match, their wasn't much worth reporting. What
added to the scene was our 15th man, young Al, turning up half-way through the match and telling
everyone just how bad we looked!! New recruit Chris Maddox came on for the last few minutes to replace
an injured Chris Sipe. After the match someone asked ChrisM if he was having fun, "Not yet". was his
reply. Capt Tory rallied the troops, had the time to run through some plays and lineouts, and a much more
prepared team went out to face Washington 'A/B'. The attitude of the team was so much better. The Pack
was solid, Tory, Irish and Josh upfront Tommy and Pete rounding out the tight five with Bill and Rabbi
splitting halves on one flank, Chris M and Jeff on the other and me at 8. The backs were led by experienced
SH Al (with a little help from Kenny) the center pairing of Eric A and English John worked well all day with
Swede, New Wave and Gary solid as the back 3. The tackling by Frederick was tremendous the Seneca
boys Tommy and Eric A crunched through the Washington backs and forwards. John's subtle try-saving
collar tackle on the SH was a Kodak moment. We never really managed to generate enough offense and
lost, making it 0 and 2 on the day. We had a long wait for the final match against Old Gaelic. This allowed
Art to find us, he just drove to Carlisle and asked in a Gas Station where the Rugby Tournament was, and
Biker Shawn to arrive. For the last match Jeff and Shawn were the second rows with Pete taking Tory's place
up front. Art and Chris M were the flankers and ChrisS returned as Full back. Chris M finally had some fun,
supporting a jinking Art, Chris received the pass and had a good 30 yards to go, he shot up the side-line for
a great score. We scored again to win, but I got a bit of a bang on the head so have no idea who scored or
how. But we won. With Tory not playing this match, we needed a new Captain, Al did a stand up job. I
think part of the decision to ask Al to captain was that he was always going to talk to the Referee anyway!!
Great job Al.

HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER SEVENS PROGRAM
This summer FRFC are committed to generating links with local High Schools. Through Chuck Zang, we
have approached the TJ Football Program and offered '7's training every Tuesday through the summer as
part of our regular practices. The goal is to enter a Frederick RFC High School team into a Tournament this
summer. This could be the start of an exciting expansion for us. One that Coach Redmond feels is essential
for our development into a strong Rugby Program. If you know of any other interested High School
athletes, have them contact Julian at (301) 662-2599 e-mail: Julian.Reading@Sandoz.com
WHO ARE ALL THESE F N G' s
If you think there aren't many new guys this season at Frederick, prepare yourself for a shock. It's a credit to
these players. They have mixed in so well, it seems like they've been here for ages. Dan 'Moo' Makosy
made Tight Head his own, which was so important as our former TH, Stu, had retired with a neck (I didn't
think he had one) injury. Moo was most recently with the MD Exiles. Another MD Exiles player that filled a
gap admirably on Tour to Savannah and in the lead up to the Norfolk play-off match was FH 'JT'
Triandafilou. Soaring Jeff Lutton came to us from the Pen State program via Nashville, and has paired up
very well with Tommy. The new backs have given the program a shot in the arm. New to rugby, Jason
Delauter has had a great first season, not only is he fast and young, but he finishes. Loads of scores this
season. Craig 'Swede' Van Winkle (yes, it is his real name) has been a solid squad player this season. He
travelled to Doylestown and got a bit of time there, played well in the Old Gaelic Tournament, and will
develop well in the Fall. Andrew Carrozza has moved to the area from the North East where he played with
Charles River. Although we haven't seen much of him this season, his job has settled down and Andrew
will be an important part of our '7's and Fall Seasons. Brad Marsh, graduated from the FRFC College '7's
squad (and Salisbury State) into the Front Row Brotherhood. Brad has a lot of talent, a shoulder injury cut
his season short, but the Fall should see him develop well. I still don't really know where to put John 'Webb'
Webster he's a small Prop/Winger I guess? Webb played with Art at WVU, and then with Morris, NJ before
coming to Frederick. Webb has a habit of turning up, Art tells me it's something to do with a keen nose for
free beer. David 'Spud' Vacala, has also played a key squad role for us. Spud knew John Redmond from his
Old Red days. Spud and his mates played against Frederick in our first season. John Astill, dubbed last
weekend by Irish 'English John' played over in England both League and Union (you see he's from up
North), a couple of matches in the Cherry Blossom for MD Exiles, and has now joined up with Frederick.
Chris Maddox is a Marine attached to the Security detail at Camp David. He has played a little rugby as a
flanker and back. With some time in the '7's program and hard work in the Fall, Chris is going to develop into
a real asset. Finally a mention for two new recruits into our College '7's squad, Tim Hoffacker, an old team
mate of Vinny Baker at Washington College and Mike Stull who played with Brad Marsh at Salisbury State.
Tim normally plays flanker and Mike is a wing/full back. Hopefully Tim and Mike will follow in Vinny and
Brad's footsteps and graduate into Frederick RFC when they leave college.
PAT DUMPE
As you all know, after suffering with ham-string problems all season, Pat finally got healthy and was
selected to play 'A'-side Loose Head Prop (with Tory sliding over to Tight Head) against Doylestown. Pat
did a great job in the tight. With 20 minutes to go, however, Pat collided heads in an open field tackle. He
was ambulanced off the field to hospital for a Cat scan, then came to the Pub to tell us he had fractured his
skull. Well, Pat now has a plate in his head, the doctor told him his head is now unbreakable and Pat intends
to come back with Frederick Rugby in the Fall. (Now I'm not one to speculate - but I'd like to see if any grey
matter was visible on those Cat scans!!) Seriously though, we all wish you a speedy recovery Pat.

STU LEVINE
Well, he may not have been able to demonstrate the wind-sprints he presided over, or illustrate the finer
points of back play, but thanks for staying close with the Club Stu. You helped out a lot in Savannah, from
the planning and hotel reservations, to a lot of the Manager's jobs too. Thanks.

Manila 10s by Walt Winn Feb 15-16 '97 (Manila, Philippines)
Manila's central location within Asia and it's reputation for hospitality has led to the Annual hosting of the
Manila 10s by the Manila Nomads as a run up/stopover for all those on their way to the Hong Kong 7s.
This year made all the more special due to the availability of tickets for the World Cup 7s at Hong Kong.
The Nomads knew that a new local rival, Subic, was attempting to put together a regular 15-a-side rugby
club, and with last minute cancellations, invited Subic to enter the Tournament. What very few knew was
that the Subic RFC consisted of 2 players. Yours truly and another American. Though there are several
rugby playing Brits at Subic, they politely excused themselves for any number of reasons. Well, to Manila
we went, both of us, hoping that the pool players would assist us in our endeavor - to win the
Championship Cup of the Manila 10s. Having an early game didn't help with our recruitment, but 8 other
players we did find. What a hodge podge - Seoul Hanboks (Korea), Sydney Scorpions (Aus), Kowloon
Cricket Club (HK) and the Waikato Warnouts (NZ) all contributed players. By the end of the day the team
was made up of us plus the Scorpions players, so we assumed the name "Subic Scorpions". With the
addition of our friends from Aus, we won the first game handily and were off to the races. The Tournament
was a real International affair. A total of 16 clubs participated from 12 countries: however, there was an
amazing similarity to their accent. I was hanging with 200 Julians. We ended the first day playing two more
games and finishing with a 2-1 record and a great point spread based on our first game. Not knowing our
position until the next day, we wondered off to the fine clubhouse to partake of many beers and some great
chicken curry. Then it was back to the hotel for a shower and then out for a very late night of more beer and
chicken curry. Sunday brought us a total surprise, we were in the Plate semifinal against a very game team,
University Ramblers from the UK. At the start of the match, as is tradition in this part of the world, the
skippers exchanged mementoes. Ours gave one of our newly minted jerseys. We got an aluminum penis
statue about 12" high in exchange. It was, and is, a sight to behold and one, I must admit, to envy. So, the
Subic RFC got our first true trophy at our first tournament! It sits in the trophy case at our watering hole -
The Subic Cafe Mediterranean. Well, that was the high point, as University ran us up and down the field at
will. The pool players we picked up had given it their all and a plate final match will have to wait to next
year. Maybe next year Frederick will come on the way to the Hong Kong 7s ...hmm... start planning!
(Next month hear about Walt's short stint as hooker with the Kowloon Potbellied Pigs!)

Adios Oliverios by Dave Wilkinson
If you haven't heard the bad (good?) news yet, Doc has been accepted to the Army's Orthopedic Surgery
School in El Paso, Texas, and will be leaving us in June. In tribute, Coach Redmond will retire "33
Goldentoe" (outside center dropkick) from the playbook! About 40 of us in the FRFC family were able to
attend the recent going away party at Brewer's Alley. Highlights included Doc and Antoinette's surprise
entry; finishing a keg of Kolsh and most of another of Stout - (after the Bartenders implied that we weren't
drinking enough); Tammy Wilkinson downing her shot of Tequila faster than both Sponge and Moo -
though Sponge's nearly came up quicker!; closing down Bushwallers (again); and Doc falling asleep in his
pancakes at Denny's. Everyone had a great time - even the Oliverios!!!! Rumor has it that Doc postponed
his move so that Antoinette and the family can attend the FRFC Summer Picnic. It's probably your last
chance to wish them well and learn Doc's technique for 'Cherry Picking' the opposition's passes without
being called off-side. Best wishes to Doc, Antoinette, Melina, Michaela and their soon to be born child #3.
