Frederick Places 2nd in Almost Heaven 7s Tournament

June 24, 2006

Frederick took a strong, large side down to Morgantown to mix it up with mostly mid-west union sides. We had a good go on the day and a good time afterward. I’m pretty sure most of the bumps and bruises players sustained from the weekend came after our last match. For the tournament we entered a regular Frederick side and also filled out a motley side that was pulled together to fill out the bracket. Others whored in for teams here and there. We were relieved to find that although the fields were a bit small, they were a definite upgrade from the concrete-like fields from the previous year. Here is how the day played out.

Pool Match 1 vs WVU
The first match started off with a bang…no, the scoreboard wasn’t turning over that quick, but rather Nick was making 40 meter runs to the try line and then popping the ball out the back (told you it’d be in here Nick). Makes me wonder why I ended up with the jerseys to wash. Anyway, Stan got the scoreboard ticking touching down the first try of the day. Next on the board was Art off a stolen line out ball followed by his conversion of the try. Just before the half, Stan dotted down his 2nd of the match and Art converted. Half time score was 19-0. The second half went about the same way as the first with three tries and one conversion. Fain got on the board with his first try on the day for Frederick (he scored two in an earlier match when he was whoring) and converted the kick. The match ended with two further tries, neither converted, from Sean and Clem “I’m not doing anything” Voinot. Final 36-0

Pool Match 2 vs. Erie
Checking the score board, we noticed that Erie had handily beaten Canton in their first match so we decided to field the strongest sevens team we could for this match. In the first part of the first half, we didn’t quite get everything going but things quickly turned around with three tries credited to Fain, Clem, and Magnum. I’m pretty certain the ball touched down by Magnum had the fingerprints from all seven Frederick players before it reached the try zone. A heckuva movement. Kenny converted two of the tries closing the half at 19-0. In the second half, Frederick rolled over Erie. Tries were credited to Clem, Magnum, and Kenney (2) with 3 of 4 converted. Final 45-0

Pool Match 3 vs. Canton
Clem went on a rampage at the start of this match. He had three tries before Canton knew there was a match on. Next to touch down was Magnum. Kenny converted two of four tries closing the half at 24-0. In the second half, things were a little mouthy on the field with Canton falling to frustration. Frederick just kept playing their game and, consequently, the scoreboard turning over. Kenny, Stan, and Chad added tries, each converting their own. Final 45-0

Semi-Final vs. Mon River
Having played the Mudlobsters the previous weekend in a 15s match, we knew they had a couple of players. They did not disappoint early by jumping up 7-0 on a converted try from a line out. The wake up call, however, is just what Frederick needed and spurred on some nice play. The try of the tournament came in this match from Kenny with a nice pop kick to himself that he gathered at pace and raced 40 meters for the try. Not sure of the half-time score, but I believe it was 14-7 to Frederick. Tries in the match came first from Clem then Kenny followed by two more for the Frenchman. Kenny converted 3 of 4. Final 26-7

Final vs. Pittsburgh Harlequins
The Harlequins had a strong showing throughout the tournament, much as Frederick had. We did have the support of the other tournament teams as it seems no one cares much for the Harlequins. Their side had a bit more size than us, but it was to be a good game. We decided to again start what we believe to be our strongest 7s players for the match and it started off quite well for us. Clem touched down a try rite of the bat, but Pittsburgh came back with three tries of their own before the half was through, converting one, putting the score at 5-17 at the half. In the second half, Frederick stiffened a bit and was able to dot down another try through Clem that he converted leaving us at 12-17 with just a minute or two remaining. Frederick had the momentum and was threatening but upon a loss of possession, Pittsburgh kicked the ball far into touch to bring on the referee’s whistle and in the match. Final 12-17

Upon the tournament trophy presentations, Frederick awarded their 2nd place trophy to Clem Voinot to take home to France with him. Not to be outdone, the Mudlobsters awarded the Man of the Tournament Award to Clem as well. Good show Frenchman! Everyone enjoyed the pig and beer afterward...Mon River always does it up nice for this tournament. The boys (and FWRFC gals) enjoyed the remainder of the evening touring the various pubs, clubs, etc. Good times had by all and Clem, I’m sorry for interrupting “nothing.”
